Poker is a game of chance, where players bet into a pot until they fold. The hand that has the highest card wins the pot.
A poker hand is made up of five cards. Two cards of the same suit, and three cards of another. In Texas Hold’em, a player can draw new cards from the top of the deck to enhance their hand.
After the initial round of betting, the second round starts with two dealers. This is called the “showdown”. When the hand is revealed, all but one player can fold.
The dealer’s last option is to shuffle. He or she can do so only if no other player has a bluff or raised.
If there is more than one player in contention after the final round of betting, the player with the highest unmatched fifth card will win the pot. Likewise, if more than one player has identical poker hands, the highest unmatched card will break ties.
Players may also bluff by betting they have the best hand. They can do this by making a forced bet, such as an ante.
The pot is the sum of all bets made in a single deal. It is divided equally among the players if a draw occurs. Usually, players buy chips equal to their total contribution to the pot. For example, if the pot is $2, then each player must place $1 worth of chips into the pot.
Cards are dealt from left to right. They may be face up or face down.
