Poker is a card game in which players place bets (representing money) into the pot during one or more rounds of play. Each round of betting takes place after a set number of cards have been dealt. Some games also have a dealer, who is responsible for shuffling and dealing the cards to each player. This role is sometimes assumed by a non-player, but it is more often passed around the table from player to player each round.<\/p>\n
Before the cards are dealt, each player must make an initial bet. This is called an ante or blind bet and may take one of three forms:<\/p>\n
After the antes or blinds are made, each player receives two cards face-down (hidden from other players). These are called that player\u2019s hole or pocket and form the basis for their eventual 5-card hand. Then 3 cards are dealt face-up in the center of the table, which are known as the flop. These are community cards, which all players can use to build their own 5-card hands. The first betting phase begins with the player to the left of the big blind.<\/p>\n
Once a player has a strong value hand, they should aim to increase their odds of winning by raising as much as possible. They should also try to price the worse hands out of the pot \u2013 so it is best to raise rather than limp.
